Insurance Myths Busted: 10 Things Most Indians Get Wrong About Coverage

A relative at a family wedding once told Rohan that term insurance is "a waste of money" because you don't get anything back if you survive the policy. Rohan, 29 and recently married, cancelled the term plan he had just bought and switched to an endowment policy that cost him five times more for a third of the cover. Three years later, when a colleague's sudden hospitalisation wiped out the family's savings, Rohan realised he had confused insurance with investment, and it cost him real protection.

This mix-up sits behind most insurance myths in India: confusing coverage with a savings plan instead of pure protection. Most Indians grow up hearing insurance advice from agents who earn a commission on selling policies, not from anyone whose job is to protect the family. That gap between what sells and what actually works is where these ten myths live.

What is life insurance actually for? #

Life insurance exists to replace your income if you die, so the people who depend on that income (your spouse, kids, or parents) aren't left in a financial hole. That's the entire job of the product. Anything else, like getting money back at maturity or building wealth, is a separate goal that insurance is a poor tool for.

A pure protection plan, known as term insurance, does exactly that one job: it pays a large sum to your family if you die during the policy term, and nothing if you don't. That "nothing if you don't" part is precisely what makes it cheap enough to buy adequate cover.

How term insurance pricing actually works #

Term insurance premiums are priced almost entirely on mortality risk: how likely someone of your age, gender, health, and habits is to die within the policy term, based on actuarial tables. Because the insurer only pays out on death and doesn't have to invest your premium and return it later, the premium is a fraction of what an investment-linked policy charges for the same cover.

A common way to size your cover is the Human Life Value (HLV) method: estimate your future income-earning years, subtract your own expenses (since your family won't need to support you), and discount that stream to a present value, then add outstanding liabilities like a home loan and subtract existing liquid assets.

Worked example: sizing cover for a 32-year-old #

Consider Ananya, 32, earning Rs 15,00,000 a year, with 28 working years left until retirement at 60. She spends roughly Rs 4,00,000 a year on herself, so the income her family actually depends on is Rs 11,00,000 a year. Using a simple multiple of 15 to 18 times annual income, a common industry shorthand for the HLV approach, that puts her core cover need between Rs 1.65 crore (15 x Rs 11,00,000) and Rs 1.98 crore (18 x Rs 11,00,000).

She also has an outstanding home loan of Rs 40,00,000 and Rs 10,00,000 in existing savings and insurance. Adding the loan and subtracting the savings brings her total cover requirement to roughly Rs 1.95 crore to Rs 2.3 crore. A term plan for that amount, for a healthy 32-year-old non-smoker over a 30-year term, typically costs somewhere between Rs 14,000 and Rs 22,000 a year, depending on the insurer and any riders added. An endowment or money-back plan offering even a tenth of that cover would cost several times more in annual premium.

Why term insurance beats the alternatives for most families #

The core benefit is simple: for the same premium, term insurance buys far more cover than any investment-linked policy. That gap matters because underinsurance, not the wrong plan type, is the real risk most families carry.

Term plans also keep the decision simple. You aren't trying to evaluate bonus rates, fund performance, or surrender values, you're just buying protection and investing the premium you saved separately in instruments built for growth, like mutual funds through a SIP calculator.

Common insurance myths, and what's actually true #

Myth 1: Term insurance is a waste because you get nothing back. You get exactly what you paid for: your family gets a large payout if you die, and if you don't, you got financial protection for that period, the same way your car insurance doesn't feel wasted just because you didn't crash.

Myth 2: Employer-provided group cover is enough. Group life cover, usually one to five times your annual salary, is a fraction of what the HLV method suggests you need, and it disappears the moment you change or lose your job, right when your family's risk hasn't gone anywhere.

Myth 3: Endowment and money-back plans are safer because they guarantee returns. Their guaranteed returns typically run between 4% and 6% a year, often lower after adjusting for the mortality charges bundled in, which barely keeps pace with inflation over a 20 or 30 year horizon.

Myth 4: You don't need life insurance if you're single with no dependents. If you have loans, ageing parents who rely on you, or plan to have dependents later, buying term cover early locks in a lower premium based on your current age and health, before either changes for the worse.

Myth 5: Claims from term insurance rarely get paid. Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India data consistently shows claim settlement ratios above 95% for most established insurers, and the rare rejections usually trace back to non-disclosure of pre-existing conditions or smoking habits at the time of purchase, not the policy type.

Myth 6: Buying cover through a bank or agent gets you a better deal. Premiums for the same insurer are usually identical whether you buy online or through an intermediary, the difference is that intermediaries add a sales conversation and sometimes push a costlier plan that pays them a higher commission.

Tips for buying insurance the right way #

Buy term cover as early as possible, since premiums rise with age and any new health condition can make you uninsurable or load your premium significantly. Disclose your medical history and smoking or drinking habits honestly, because a claim rejected for non-disclosure defeats the entire purpose of buying the policy.

Review your cover every few years, particularly after a marriage, child, home loan, or big salary jump, since your HLV changes with each of these. Keep term insurance and investing as two separate decisions: buy adequate term cover, then invest the premium you save (compared to an endowment plan) into a diversified mutual fund SIP for wealth creation.

Internal links to check your numbers #

Use the term insurance calculator to estimate the cover and premium that fit your income and liabilities, including a worked scenario like a 35-year-old earning Rs 18 lakh with three dependents. If you're redirecting premium savings into investing, the SIP calculator and emergency fund calculator are good next stops for building the rest of your financial safety net.

Frequently asked questions #

Is term insurance enough, or do I also need health insurance? #

You need both, they cover different risks. Term insurance protects your family's income if you die; health insurance covers medical treatment costs while you're alive, and a serious illness without health cover can drain the same savings term insurance is meant to protect.

How much term insurance cover do I actually need? #

A common starting point is 15 to 20 times your annual income, adjusted for outstanding loans and existing savings, as shown in the worked example above. Your specific number depends on your dependents' expenses, your loan tenure, and how many working years you have left.

Can I buy term insurance if I already have a pre-existing condition? #

Usually yes, though insurers may charge a higher premium or exclude specific conditions, depending on severity. It's still worth applying and disclosing everything accurately rather than skipping cover altogether.

Does term insurance cover cost increase every year? #

No, for a standard level-term plan the premium is fixed for the entire policy term at the rate locked in when you bought it. This is one more reason buying early, while premiums are lowest, makes financial sense.

What happens to my term insurance if I switch jobs? #

Nothing changes. Unlike employer group cover, an individual term policy you bought yourself stays active regardless of your employment status, as long as you keep paying the premium.

The bottom line #

Most insurance myths in India trace back to confusing protection with investment, or trusting an agent's incentive over your family's actual need. Term insurance is unglamorous precisely because it does one job well and cheaply. Run your own numbers on the term insurance calculator before your next renewal or purchase, and size your cover to your real income and liabilities, not to what an agent is trying to sell you that month.
